The QB Whirlygig Continues

Now Warner's going to be the starting QB, because Leinart had a crappy half against Oakland. I guess the Cards' really think the division is there for the taking, and they can't risk shaky QBing sabotaging their big chance to take the NFC West. Well, if they can run the football enough to keep other teams from blitzing Warner until they knock his head off, this just might work. I have little doubt Whisenhunt will try to run, whether they'll have success is another matter.

Of course, there's the question of what Leinart's state of mind is now, and how ready he'll be if Warner does get hurt, and Leinart has to come in to save the day. He was supposedly really working hard the last few weeks, and to lose his job after a bad half, well, that could be damaging. Hopefully it all works out.

On an unrelated note, I think Shawne Merriman should probably get the full knee surgery, and just sit out this year. Playing on two torn knee ligaments just sounds like a bad idea. Besides, it's not as though the Chargers will reward him for that, especially if he gets hurt, or his play suffers (both of which seem pretty likely). They'll just cut him, thanks for the effort, sorry about your knees, but we don't need you anymore, so fuck off. The NFL is a harsh mistress.

The thing about Merriamn is wierd to me. I nderstand being a "gamer" and wanting to play through injuries, but why risk your whole carreer to play a few games before you take a shot to your leg that does put you out the whole season. You know guys will be going after that knee likes it a pile of 100 dollar-bills flying across the field.

This will be a good test of Leinart's psyche to see if he can play in the NFL. If he can handle the 3-4 games onthe bench before Warner gets urt (and he will) and come in a be effective, he'll have a future. If not, he's cooked, good luck on The Bachelor, Matt.

Fortunately, with the combination of the Bear's front office being clueless and the Cubs seemingly post-season bound, I'll be able to ignore football completely until (please, please, please) November.

Also, Mariotti quit the Sun Times! Finally, the City of Chicago is free of his (somewhat) daily ass-hat columns. Of course, he will keep his ESPN gig.

jason: Mariotti's off the Sun-Times?! Holy crap. I really wondered how long he had when I kept seeing those posts on Deadspin where he was taking thinly veiled shots at other Chicago sportswriters, and was trying to keep security between him and some of them in the locker rooms.

As to Warner/Leinart, well now Warner supposedly hasn't heard from Whisenhunt that he is the starter, and it may just have been a ploy to get Leinart more demonstrative. Personally, I don't care whether Matt throws his helmet to the ground after a pick or not, as long as he learns something from it, and tries to avoid making the same mistake in the future (provided it was his fault, and not the receiver's, or just a really good play by the DB).

Oh, Mariotti's shots weren't veiled, he was naming names and was at full-on war with the Sun-Time's other big comumnist, Rick Telander. Rumor is, the tipping point was on Monday, when he returned from Beijing and wanted to write a column on Obama's supposed dis against Cub's fans, but Telander had already wrote a column on the subject, so they wouldn't let Mariotti write it. So Mariotti said, "Let me do it, or I'll quit." They called his bluff. Word is, he's trying to get hired on at the Tribune, which I really hope he doesn't, since that's the paper I read.
